Deniz Beşer (İstanbul/Turkey) is active in the 'fanzine'- and graffiti scene of Istanbul. His art pieces are always inspired by those subculture movements. He is telling us about our own popular culture, politics and daily life routines by putting ordinary objects in surprising new, often humorous contexts. Deniz Beser`s studied Glass and Ceramic design in Istanbul. His artworks were exhibited in Spain, France, Germany, Slovakia, U.S.A., Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey. Giorgos Gerontides (Salonika/Greece and Cyprus) is inspired by everyday life symbols and is able to create astonishing objects from these. An example are his sculptures made of simple cardboard. The young artist studied at art schools, both in Greece and in France and now lives in Greece and Cyprus. Jorge Arturo Guzman Perez (Mexico City/Mexico) is a visual artist from Mexico City. He considers his work as "hard to digest", because it always has a close relationship with death. The artist creates a confrontation between memory, construction and absence of identity. Jorge Guzman considers art as a process in constant changing and evolution; it seems pretty much as life is to him. That's why Jorge is interested in hybrids processes between life and art. Viki Semou (Tübingen/Germany) has studied Architecture in Greece and did a Master in Fine Arts in the Netherlands. Since November 2012 she is based in Tübingen. Her work comprises performance, video, installations and interventions in the public space. The participation of the audience is often asked through tasks that they have to carry out. She is interested in the ways values, attitudes, and power relations are inscribed on space and objects, while one of her recurring research topics concerns 'Home in an Era of Movement'. Raymond Weilacher (Baltimore/U.S.A.) Raymond Cole is the nom de plume of artist Raymond Weilacher. Cole is a researcher and author, deeply interested in systems of power as well as all things esoteric. Working from a background in media studies, Weilacher/Cole investigates and presents his findings on subjects as diverse as astrobiology, neuroscience, conspiracy theories, and philosophy. Cole's findings point out that the world may be a far stranger place than we can imagine... Temporary participants Lecture, discussion, performance guests or with associated research project Patricija Gilyte (Ulm and München/Germany) The visual repertoire of Germany-based Lithuanian artist Patricija Gilyte includes performative sculpture, video art and site-specific installation. She explores these media while mixing and interlacing, creating cross-relations between them. Patricija plays with references from numerous sources, including Lithuanian poetry and literary sources from the XIX century, landscape, geography, cultural traditions and its boundaries, ancient culture myths. Her work utilizes these different cultural phenomena in an open approach that embraces their relationships to each other. Caro Krebietke (Stuttgart/Germany) lives in Stuttgart, is educated in Sculpture at Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart. The themes of her installations and performances emerge in a dialogue with the surroundings and with various groups of people. The projects partially invent themselves. This is an open process. Chance plays a large role and also the stories which the people involved carry within them and thus very literally contribute. The interaction between those involved, the location and the artistic forms of expression creates images and moments of surprise. The process follows its own inner logic and sometimes something entirely new can emerge that was never intended or even imagined. Birgit Schübelin (Nürtingen/Germany) 55 - 181 beats per minute stands for the bandwidth of her own heart frequency measured during different activities. She transforms them into drawing series. It is an attempt to track and document her own ageing process in the course of time and to create a connection between sports, medicine and art. Dorothea Seror (Munich/Germany) The Munich based performance artist was working in China, Israel, Mühldorf am Inn and at many other places. She has directed, curated and has got several awards and grants. In her work she transforms herself into art and goes beyond the limitations of the body. She is using it as subject, object and tool and creates performative life situations. Julia Unverferth (Hamburg/Germany) lives and works in Hamburg, studied Fine Arts at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg (Monika Baer, Jutta Koether). Her artistic work is affected by the scepticism of the media philosopher Jean Baudrillard towards reality. Unverferth sees her work as a kind of research, in which she examines the different conditions of "picture-making." Her interest pertains positions of artistic abstraction, neuro-aesthetic reception conditions and the problem of the new in art or the "already-been-there", from which she draws experiments of copy and repeat. "When I paint, I create a painting which consists of a pinch of neuro-aesthetic processes, a piece of painterly learned convention, a tablespoon of abstract art, 200ml environment, ½ tsp science and 50g specified targets." Chen Wang (Stuttgart/Germany) lives and works in Stuttgart, studied art in China, Bonn and Mainz, where she also graduated from the Master School. In her work, she is always searching for the core of her self. Her works are confused and labyrinthine, tools and mode of representation play a subordinate role. Focused instead are communication and interaction. |

Can you tell me what is artistic research? I think... it means gaining knowledge in a self-determined way by following the questions that are important to yourself (which does not mean that they have to be unique or ever will be answered). Is that all? No... I think it also includes free choice in how you want to investigate them. The individual choses the methods that appear most appropriate for him/her, e.g. in terms of preferences, mental and physical capacity, time, money, efficiency, relationships, available material, and so on. Where is the artistic aspect? It finds expression in the result of this investigative process. A scientist would publish an article, a manager would augment profits and boost performance, an artist would... what? We want to improve our knowledge and understanding of artistic research processes, gain new insights and explore neglected perspectives of human knowledge. Therefore we would like to invite a few artists to join us for a 4-weeks residency to work, think, discuss, develop ideas and exhibit the outcome of the process. when? 27th May - 22nd June 2013 where?
